Above the rooftops, on wasteland and streets, in the basements. It grows and shrinks, offers space and freedom, inspires. It drives away, it is closed, it is colourful, noisy and stinks, it is annoying and painful. It is public and private, anonymous and cool, ugly and gorgeous. It is endless boredom, an eternal competition, emptiness and distress, a hiding place, an opportunity, a constant conflict. It is an inspiration, a playground, a prohibition; an investment, a disturbance, a nightmare. A jungle, a sound, a rhythm. It blocks the vista and provides the view. It expels, excludes, numbs; it is hectic and completely relaxed. It is dreamed, planned and built upon. And it is always more beautiful someplace else. The city.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung »Images of the Present« bringen wir die Mobile ANT!FOTO Bar für einen Abend nach Stuttgart. Wir laden nach dem Vorbild kleiner japanischer Themenbars zum offenen Austausch über Fotografie und Fotobücher ein. Bei der Veranstaltung haben wir rare internationale Fotobücher und Filme zur Dokumentarfotografie sowie einige japanische Snacks und Getränke dabei.

Ben Krewinkel (Maastricht, 1975) studierte moderne afrikanische Geschichte in Amsterdam und Pretoria. Seine Dissertation handelt von der Rolle der Frauen im dem Befreiungskampf in Mosambik. Außerdem studierte er Dokumentarfotografie an der Fotoacademie Amsterdam. Das Studium schloss er mit einer Arbeit über dieAusbildung von Krankenschwestern zur Bekämpfung von HIV in Venda, Südafrika ab, die mit „cum laude“ bewertet wurde. Er hat außerdem einen Master Abschluss der »Photographic Studies« der Universität Leiden; dazu forschte er über die die fotografische Darstellung der ‚armen Weißen‘ in Südafrika im 20. Jahrhundert. Seitdem schreibt Ben Krewinkel über Fotografie und arbeitet derzeit an einem langfristigen Projekt mit dem Titel »Africa in the Photobook«, ein Projekt über die sich verändernde visuelle Darstellung Afrikas durch das Medium des Fotobuchs.

Die Mobile ANT!FOTO BAR geht aus einer Ausstellungs- und Magazinreihe hervor, die seit 2010 von Katja Stuke und Oliver Sieber kuratiert wird. Sie versteht sich als ein Ort des Austauschs und Diskurses über Fotografie und Fotobücher sowie als Treffpunkt verschiedener Fotografie-Akteur*innen – konzipiert nach dem Vorbild kleiner japanischer Themen-Bars. Dieses Mal stellen sie, neben einer Auswahl an Büchern und Filmen zum Thema Mode, Musik und Subkultur, auch das aktuelle ANT!FOTO Magazin vor. Das Magazin enthält Interviews mit Kyoichi Tsuzuki, Andrzej Steinbach, Detlef Weinrich aka Tolouse Low Trax, Sebastian Lux/Stiftung FC Gundlach, Adam Murray, Hanayo, BIEST Berlin u.v.m.

In Sept 2021 the virtual space »Tokyo Happy« deals with Ariake in Tokyo, on of the sites of the Olympic Games. In the virtual space you can see various chapters from the »Japanese Lesson«, different images taken in Ariake in 2017 and again in Google Street View in 2021; also some videos from Second Life and Google Street View, wandering through the different streets of Ariake.

To conclude the exhibition project The Things I Tell You Will Not Be Wrong by Scope Hannover – Biennale for Photography and Media Art 2020/21, the Biennale team invites you to a critical discussion. The panel discussion will analyse the possibilities and limits of online art production with the Biennale artists and other guests. The panel discussion will be held in German and English.
ANT!FOTO Bar: 12 – 6 pm The ANT!FOTO Bar, a project by the artists Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber, will take place at the same time. Originally a monthly meeting in Düsseldorf, it is moving to Hanover as an event for the Biennale. The ANT!FOTO Bar is a place for discussion and exchange about contemporary and historical photography, with a focus on photobooks, a meeting place inspired by small Japanese Bars.

ANT!FOTO Bar & TAL Tentenko (Tokyo) Artist Talk Das Gespräch beginnt 20 Uhr. Die Bar öffnet um 19:30 Uhr ANT!FOTO Bar c/o Tina Miyake, Ackerstraße 39, 40233 Düsseldorf
In den letzten beiden Jahren hat sich TENTENKO zu den aufregendsten Stimmen der elektronischen Underground Musik Japans entwickelt. Ihre Produktionen oszillieren dabei zwischen freien Noise Experimenten und der monotonen Schönheit kraftvoller Rhythmus Tracks. Ihrer aktuellen Arbeit ging eine quasi erste Karriere in der japanischen IDOL Kultur voraus, welche sie in die Welt von Teenage J-Pop, Starlet Videos und industriellem Merchandising, führte. Zu ihrer ersten Tour in Europa überhaupt, erschien auf dem Düsseldorfer Label TAL gerade das Album SUPER MILD. Am 18.12. spielt TENTENKO live im Salon des Amateurs in Düsseldorf.
Die Bar wird an diesem Abend Shochu, Suntory Whiskey, Highball und Sake anbieten. In der Buchvitrine der Bar werden Fotobücher über japanische Sub- und Musikkultur zum Lesen bereitstehen.
