Dear Friends, Supporter, Collectors. In October 2011 I started working on my new project »国庆节 Nationalfeiertag«. I travelled to Beijing with Oliver, who wanted to take some portraits of punks for »Imaginary Club«. I myself was quite interested in Tiananmen Square. On the one hand because it’s one of the biggest public squares worldwide and one of the monitored at most. On the other hand I was curious because of it’s historic significance, especially the situation in 1989: the student’s protest in April and May and the massacre on June 4th. We spent some days on Tiananmen Square during as well Chinese National Holiday on Oct. 1st as the following Golden Week and I was able to film some hours of material.
Last year (with the support of the Arts Foundation „Kunststiftung NRW“) I could travel to Hongkong, 25 years after the Tiannanmen Massacre. Every year there is a huge Remembrance Event in Victory Park on June 4th and a demonstration for Freedom and Democracy on June 1st. During both events I could take some photographs and could film for some hours.
Thus I could create more than 100 portraits. Portraits of people on Tianamen Square who possibly don’t know about what happened on this place where they are at that moment and portraits of people in Hongkong who under no circumstances don’t want to forget what happened.
In July this year the »国庆节 Nationalfeiertag«-book will be released. It is a collaboration between BöhmKobayashi, Düsseldorf and FW:books, Amsterdam and I am really happy about this.
It’s too late now to read your name in the book as we will start printing within the next days – but you can still purchase the edition. There are still some prints available. If you have more questions, want to read a short text about the series or want to see more images of don’t hesitate to send an email»» Thank you. Katja Stuke.
